Type D visa is mandatory for foreign nationals planning long-term residence in Bulgaria. The absence of even one required document may lead to refusal, so preparation must be careful and timely.
Documents for a D visa are submitted in person at the consular service. Originals and the passport are returned to the applicant after review. All documents issued in Russian must be translated by translators accredited to the Embassy and certified at the consular service.
The minimum processing time for documents is 30 working days. The consular fee is 100 euros and is paid upon submission. The fee is for document processing and is non-refundable, even in case of refusal.
Main documents for a D visa
To apply, a valid foreign passport is required with a validity period of at least 18 months from the date of submission, with at least two blank pages and issued no earlier than 10 years ago. A copy of the passport's first page, a completed and signed visa application form, and a recent color passport-size photo are required.
Proof of secured accommodation in Bulgaria is mandatory. This can be a notarized deed of ownership of a property or a lease agreement with notarized signatures.
Proof of financial means is also required – a bank document certifying the availability of funds in an account. The amount must be at least equal to six minimum monthly wages in Bulgaria.
A valid medical insurance for the territory of Bulgaria is required for a minimum of 6 months and with an insured sum of not less than 30,000 euros.
Applicants over 18 years old must present a certificate of no criminal record with a notarized translation, valid at the time of submission.
Depending on the basis for residence, additional documents may be required, including documents related to commercial representation, business activity, or other legal status.
Important to know
The consular service has the right to request additional documents or to invite the applicant for an interview. In case of refusal the applicant is notified officially and has the right to file a complaint or to reapply after remedying the reasons for refusal.
